The Crossing’s humble beginnings go all the way back to the Summer of 1994 when the decision was made to start a mail-order business specializing in used Christian CDs. The concept of buying second-hand CDs was still very novel at the time, and used CD stores were beginning to pop up in every major city across the country. The idea of not having to pay full retail price for a CD at a mall store with an incredibly limited selection was very appealing to most music lovers. Then came the problem of CDs in the Christian market that had only been published a few years earlier and were already becoming very difficult to find. With the Christian music industry, just like the secular music industry, it was a matter of economics. If a band’s CDs were not selling enough units, the label would quickly put the title "Out of Print" and delete it from their catalog shortly thereafter. So, in light of offering an alternative to the high prices of new CDs and trying to locate as many hard-to-find Christian titles as possible, the idea for The Crossing was born.
In 1995 we printed and distributed of our first tiny catalog, listing about 100 CDs and a bunch of Christian vinyl records that were in stock at the time. Each successive catalog that was mailed out to our small but growing customer list was a little larger and a little better. Advertising in Heaven’s Metal and CCM magazine, passing out flyers at Christian music festivals, and good old-fashioned word-of-mouth helped spread the news about The Crossing and its great selection of used CDs. In 1996 news began to travel the globe much more rapidly with the advent of email and our very first, primitive website. In reality it was just The Crossing’s catalog stuck up on a server so people could view it on their computer screen and then call or email us to place an order…not real exciting when you look back now, but very cool at the time.
The Crossing grew slowly but surely, adding new customers from all over the world and expanding our music selection by offering discounted new releases, imports, and independent artists as the budget would allow. Early websites were dismantled and replaced with better and more robust sites as technology marched forward. Eventually, we ceased the publication of printed catalogs due to the great expense in time, energy and money for something that was impossible to keep updated with our daily-changing inventory. The website we launched in 2002 offered real-time shopping, keeping the inventory current as CDs were automatically removed from the database with each customer’s purchase.
